Volkswagen ID Review: Is it a True Contender Against Tesla?
As a Tesla enthusiast and owner, I am always on the lookout for the latest electric vehicles hitting the market. Recently, Volkswagen unveiled their new electric car, the ID. While I am excited to see more competition in the EV market, I couldn't help but wonder if the ID will be a true contender against the likes of Tesla. So, I decided to do some research and share my thoughts on the Volkswagen ID.
The Design
One of the first things that caught my eye about the Volkswagen ID is its sleek and modern design. The car looks futuristic and stands out from the crowd of traditional gas-powered vehicles. However, upon closer inspection, I noticed that the ID looks very similar to the Tesla Model 3. The similarities in the front grille, headlights, and overall body shape are hard to ignore. While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, I can't help but wonder if Volkswagen is trying too hard to compete with Tesla by copying their design.
Performance
When it comes to performance, the Volkswagen ID boasts an impressive range of up to 342 miles on a single charge. This is comparable to Tesla's Model S and Model X, but falls short of the Model 3's 353-mile range. The ID also has a top speed of 99 mph and can go from 0-60 mph in just 7.6 seconds. While these specs are impressive, they don't quite measure up to Tesla's performance capabilities.
Charging
Charging is a crucial aspect of owning an electric vehicle, and the Volkswagen ID offers some unique charging options. The ID comes equipped with an 11 kW AC charger, which can charge the car to full in just over six hours. However, if you're in a hurry, the ID also has the capability to charge up to 80% in just 30 minutes using a DC fast charger. While this is a great feature, it still falls short of Tesla's Supercharger network, which can charge a Tesla to 80% in just 30 minutes.
Price
One area where the Volkswagen ID has a clear advantage over Tesla is in price. The ID is expected to start at around $33,000, making it more affordable than any Tesla model on the market. This price point could make the ID an attractive option for those who are looking to switch to an electric vehicle but can't afford the higher price tag of a Tesla.
The Verdict
Overall, the Volkswagen ID is an impressive electric vehicle that could give Tesla a run for their money. While the ID falls short in some areas, such as performance and charging capabilities, it excels in others, such as price and design. If Volkswagen can continue to improve upon the ID and offer more competitive specs, they could become a major player in the EV market. However, as a die-hard Tesla fan, I will still be sticking with my Model S for now.
Trivia: Did you know that Volkswagen was actually founded by the German Labour Front, a Nazi organization, in 1937? The company was originally created to produce affordable cars for the German people, but went on to become a global automotive powerhouse.
