EU Probes Tesla Giga Shanghai Tariffs

Well, folks, it seems the European Union is taking a page from Sherlock Holmes’ playbook, putting Tesla’s Giga Shanghai under the microscope. This isn’t about any Scotland Yard-worthy shenanigans though, no, this is about the almighty Euro.

You see, the EU recently slapped some tariffs on electric vehicles coming in from China, and now they’re trying to figure out just how much Tesla should be coughing up. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher since Tesla wasn’t initially part of the main investigation. It’s like being called in for questioning after the case is closed.

The EU inspectors popped over to Giga Shanghai for a quick peek, a much shorter visit than those given to other automakers. Maybe they heard about the cafeteria food?

Fun Fact: Tesla Giga Shanghai is the largest electric vehicle production plant globally.

The EU’s initial investigation focused on BYD, Geely, and SAIC, slapping each with their own duty rates. Tesla, in a move that surprised no one, argued they should be treated as a separate case. Initially, the EU wasn’t keen on that idea, keeping them out of the main investigation. Yet, Tesla, being Tesla, still had a seat at the table, participating in discussions and even scoring a temporary, lower duty rate of 20.8%.

Now, with the EU poking around Giga Shanghai, it seems they’re reconsidering, potentially giving Tesla its own, individually calculated tariff rate.

Is the EU being fair? Is Tesla trying to pull a fast one? Stay tuned, folks, because this saga is far from over!
